Beskrivning av kursen
The course – delivered through English – is an introduction to research in artistic practice which is the aggregate subject area that includes craft, curating, design, film, fine art and literary composition (i.e., the broad spectrum of contemporary creative arts that we provide within the HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design and that does not include music and drama subjects which addressed by our partner Academy in the Artistic Faculty, HSM.)The course uses a carefully selected set of case study examples (informed by senior research projects and the HDK-Valand research clusters) as a way to introduce key ideas and practices through a combination of formal presentation and seminar. Practical workshops on peer-review processes; search processes; and assessment of various publicly disseminated artistic research outputs will give the participants first-hand experience as a means to enhance the learning of the general introductory principles in artistic research. The course will draw upon the in-house infrastructures of PARSE and related publishing infrastructures as a basis to provide direct experience of making public and peer review practices. There is an optional trip to Kiruna in the course (10-13 February) (However, this is mandatory for new PhDs starting HDK-Valand Spring 2027.)

Förkunskapskrav
Deltagarna ska vara antagna till forskarutbildning och bedriva ett forskningsprojekt inom kreativ praktik (i vid bemärkelse, vilket kan omfatta bildkonst, tillämpad konst, konstnärlig gestaltning, design, hantverk, arkitektur, litteratur, film, fotografi och medieproduktion).
Antagning sker utifrån följande prioritering:
1. Doktorander vid Konstnärliga fakulteten
2. Doktorander vid andra fakulteter vid Göteborgs universitet eller vid någon av HDK-Valands samarbetspartners inom forskarutbildning
3. Doktorander vid andra universitet/högskolor.
Urval
This course compulsory for doctoral researchers commencing PhD studies in artistic practice at HDK-Valand. The course is also open to doctoral researchers in these creative arts in other institutions in Sweden and internationally.
Participants based in the University of Gothenburg are expected to attend in person, while those from other institutions have the option to participate remotely (online).
Requirements and Selection Entry requirements Participants are required to have been admitted to third-cycle education and to be engaged in a research project that pertains to the broad domain of art and design.
If places are available, doctoral students admitted at other departments at the University of Gothenburg or elsewhere may also participate.
Selection is performed according to the following:
1. Doctoral students at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts
2. Doctoral students at another faculty within the University of Gothenburg
3. Doctoral students admitted to other higher education institutions.
