Beskrivning av kursen
The course seeks to establish how theoretical tasks arise within the research process and how these theoretical tasks may be re-framed, re-negotiated, re-solved or re-articulated in different ways. This work is done both through active theorizing done within the research process; and through drawing upon the theoretical work of others. A key aspect of the course then is looking at theoretical resources that have been actively employed within artistic research while also looking at the specific theoretical needs arising within your individual doctoral research project.
The course uses a range of formats including a set of introductory presentation and discussion sessions; seminars on theoretical sources proposed and selected by the participants; guest speakers; and special workshops on archives and editorial/publishing practices. The course is based on the approach of considering how specific research undertakings generate occasions of theorizing, i.e., addressing the need for theoretical production immanent to the process of inquiry and not simply the imposition of pre-existing theoretical commitments and preferences on the part of the inquirer. Themes addressed include: the movement between the act of theorising and the use of existing theorisations; competing constructions of aesthetic from Baumgarten’s “epistêmê aisthetikê” to decolonial AestheSis and Rancière’s “aesthetic regime”; varieties of posthumanism and more-than-human constructions; STS and ANT; ‘the practice turn’ in anthropology; and other theoretical frameworks that have been used across a range of artistic research projects.
The course is blended, meaning it uses both face-to-face and ZOOM encounters. It is possible to take the course without physically going on campus. However, PhD researchers employed at the University of Gothenburg will normally be expected to attend on campus for those sessions that have face-to-face meetings.
Where participants have the opportunity to nominate a theoretical source for other participants to read and discuss they are asked to indicate:
- What is the nature of the source, and where it may be accessed?
- What is the connection between the source and their overall research task?
- What specific question or issue they would like to focus on in the discussion of the source?
When discussing a nominated source, the person nominating the source provides an introduction and outline of the text (15 minutes). This person also is responsible for writing up a summary of the discussion. Breakout groups will be used for some discussions, depending on the nature of the readings used, and the number of interested participants.
