Course description
The course aims to familiarize the doctoral student with factors of relevance to the proposed dissertation work. These may concern region, theory or method. The student will discuss the importance of these factors for understanding the dissertation’s research object. The course also covers the way in which earlier studies in the research field have made use of concepts from regional, theoretical or methodological discourses and will explore how the dissertation work may problematize these. Finally, the course aims to evaluate knowledge about particular factors for defining relevant research questions and making methodological, analytical and ethical considerations.

The course is given for PhD students in Social Anthropology at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg.
Other information
The course is taught through lectures, seminars and individual work. It may also be offered as a reading course comprising independent study with teaching taking the form of discussion and supervision.
