Course description
The course focuses on designing a dissertation in a coherent manner. This includes discussions about how to define the research topic of the dissertation, explain its contribution to anthropology, formulate its argument, construct its analytical and conceptual framework, and present its structure. It considers how theory and ethnography are integrated and how to use empirical data to substantiate an argument in ethnographic writing. Students compare the designs adopted in various anthropological dissertations, including a compilation thesis. Strategies for coding and analysing ethnographic material are discussed.
