Course description

The aim of the course is to increase doctoral students´ theoretical and practical knowledge of qualitative research methods used in the context of coercive psychiatric care and forensic psychiatry, as well as the ethical dilemmas that may arise in these contexts. Further, to enhance understanding of how to conduct qualitative research in collaboration with service users.

The course includes one week of on-campus meetings with lectures, seminars, workshops, and both group and individually assessed assignments. The second week of the course consists of independent study of the course literature, including a preparatory online test and a written examination task to be completed after the campus week.

The course is the fourth of five courses within the National Interdisciplinary Research School in Compulsory Psychiatric Care and Forensic Psychiatry (COMPFOR Research School).

Requirements and Selection

Entry requirements


Enrolled in doctoral education or holding a PhD in a relevant subject. The course is an elective course within the doctoral education at the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Selection

Selection is performed according to the following:

  1. PhD students at Sahlgrenska Academy,
  2. PhD students enrolled at another university within a formal collaborative agreement on doctoral education with Sahlgrenska Academy,
  3. PhD students enrolled at another faculty at the University of Gothenburg or another university in Sweden,
  4. PhD students enrolled at a university outside Sweden.
